Bakers Union donates to Quorn Grange Nursery

A very welcome donation of new computer equipment has been made by the Bakers’ Union to the GFTU’s nursery provision at Quorn Grange. GFTU General Secretary Doug Nicholls, said: “We are running a co operative social enterprise to fund our education programme and provide useful activities for the local community and of course jobs, so it is really appreciated when affiliates contribute to this endeavour. This really is in the best spirit of inter union solidarity and mutual support. We are very grateful to the generosity of the BFAWU.”

Somerville College Visit

GFTU Education Officers had a fascinating day visiting Somerville College Oxford University. The invitation had been extended by Somerville Principal Dr. Alice Prochaska, author of the first book on the history of the GFTU.

Alice and Admissions Tutor Steve Raynor led extensive discussions about widening access to Oxford University and support from academics and the college for union training, research and policy development. A tour of the college revealed a history of progressive support for women academics and women’s issues and a modern college committed to a positive social purpose. Education officers present also discussed ways of promoting and building on the extensive GFTU Education Programme and added some more training to it in relation to Union Learning Representatives and customised training for some unions.
